Chapter Eleven

I’d Rather Share My Left Lung

They left. Jessica was alone, her head hurt worse than before. She tried to stand but she was overwhelmed with vertigo and puked in the corner. Skip left the basement door open. If she could only get up the stairs. She struggled to her feet, rested and staggered forward, using the washing machine, the wall, a stack of boxes and a water heater for support. By the time she reached the stairs, the basement was whirling around her and the pain was worse. She hung on to the railing so she wouldn’t fall down.

She looked up at the basement door. It was so far away, like the fucking moon or Australia. “You’re a tough old bitch, Jess,” she said to herself. “You can do it.” She put her foot on the first step, began putting her weight down but her vision wobbled and her knees buckled and she clung to the railing. She let herself down as easily as she could and sat. Her breathing was gritty and slow, her head was an exploding minefield. She wanted to sleep. She glanced up the stairs again, the open door calling to her. I’ll never make it, she thought.
